Bloomfield College's Kira Wagar among NJAIAW 'Women of the Year'

Alum one of the top offensive players in program history

Former Bloomfield College softball and women's soccer player Kira Wagar (Rochester, N.Y.) has been named the school's recipient of the New Jersey Association of Athletics for Women (NJAIAW) Woman of the Year Award, in results released last Sunday, January 22.

Wagar and her fellow institutional honorees were guests of honor at the annual NJAIAW Woman of the Year luncheon, run in celebration of National Girls and Women in Sports Day. Following the banquet held at Seton Hall University, each winner was recognized at halftime of the Pirates' women's basketball game against Syracuse University.

One of the top offensive players in program history, Wagar completed a stellar Bloomfield career with a banner senior campaign, in which she earned first team National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) All-East Region honors.  A second team Daktronics All-East Region selection, Wagar was also a first team All-CACC selection and helped guide the Lady Deacons to the CACC Tournament during the 2011 season.  Equally a standout in the classroom, Wagar earned an NFCA Academic All-America nod during her final season at Bloomfield.

"Kira was truly an incredible student-athlete during her time here, so she is certainly deserving of whatever recognition she receives," softball head coach Rocco Constantino said.  "She was a tremendous player on the field, playing nearly every position and coming up with more clutch hits then I can count.  But her work in the classroom was equally as impressive, and that speaks volumes about the type of person she is.  She was an outstanding role model for our other athletes during her time here, and I'm very proud of her for receiving this award."
