Car Owner Foils Would-Be Thief In Bloomfield, Police Say

The victim ran back to her car and started to hit the would-be thief until he retreated, authorities said.

BLOOMFIELD, NJ — The latest vehicle-related crimes in Bloomfield include an attempted car theft at a parking lot that was foiled by the would-be victim, and a theft at a local Carvel, authorities reported last week.

According to the Bloomfield Police Department, officers responded to 57 Park Avenue on July 21 after getting a report about a car theft attempt.

The victim told officers that she left her vehicle running in the parking lot as she went to pick up her child from daycare. She then saw a silver Mercedes with two men inside enter the lot. One of the men got out of the car and entered her vehicle, police said.

The victim ran back to her car and started to hit the would-be thief. The man retreated to the Mercedes – which was later found to be stolen out of New York state – and the car fled the scene, police said.

Two days later, however, a car was stolen just a few blocks away, police said.

Bloomfield officers responded to the Carvel at 586 Bloomfield Avenue on July 23 after getting a report about a motor vehicle theft.

The victim left his vehicle parked and running while he went into the Carvel. Upon returning, he noticed it was gone, police said.

The vehicle, a 2021 black BMW X7, was entered into the National Crime Information Center as stolen. The incident is under investigation, police said.
