Many consider his portrayal of a German who refuses to support the Nazis in 1922 to be the finest performance of James Stewart’s career. Stewart falls in love with Freya Roth (Margaret Sullivan) who is engaged to a Nazi party member (Robert Young). One of the few films to depict the evils of Hitler’s regime before the United States entered World War II, this unforgettable film was also the last movie Stewart and Sullivan made together.
