“Today’s workers grapple with what it means to toil in a capitalist economy, just as U.S. workers did in the Gilded Age. Through an examination of the diary of Bloomfield resident Thomas Mortimer (1854–1941), a long-time loom fixer at Oakes Mill, this presentation will offer a glimpse into the working class life of Bloomfield in the 1890s. Knarr’s 2021 book, ‘The Diary of Thomas Benjamin Mortimer, 1888–1902,’ will be available for a small donation to the HSOB.”
