Meet the Candidate: Kent Weisert

Kent Weisert is seeking election in November as a Republican candidate in the 2nd Ward.

My name is Kent Weisert and I hope to have the honor to represent the residents of the Second Ward as your member on the Township Council.

I am running for Township Council to try to reduce Township expenditures in order to reduce, rather than increase, Township property taxes.  These taxes have increased at an alarming rate over the last several years, forcing many people from their homes.  This is a tragedy and has to be stopped.

Over the years, I have seen many changes occur in Bloomfield, many of them not for the better, especially over the past ten to fifteen years. Property taxes have more than doubled, forcing many residents from their homes.  Attempts to redevelop Bloomfield Center have encountered one disaster after another. A beautiful and historic building such as the Royal Theater was demolished and turned into a parking lot rather than adapted for reuse. Bloomfield needs to change direction, and it needs to do so now.

I hope to be an agent of that change.  If elected, the first proposal I will make is to reduce municipal expenditures by at least five percent (5%). Just as those of us in the private sector have been forced to make due with less over the past several years, so must government.  Enough is enough.

Second, Clark’s Pond, as well as other open areas, should be maintained and responsibly managed and, in some cases, developed.

Third, Bloomfield Center must be creatively redeveloped and made attractive to shoppers. Its position astride both rail and bus lines to New York should be fully exploited, in a fashion similar to Maplewood, South Orange and Clifton.

I am a lifelong resident of Bloomfield.  In fact, I still live in the home in which I was born and which my parents built in 1941.  After successfully attending Bloomfield public schools, I went to Rutgers-Newark undergraduate and law school. Since then I have practiced labor and employment law (as well as general practice).

My interests include classical music, historic preservation, environmental protection and economic prosperity, which I believe can only be accomplished by individual free enterprise freed from burdensome taxes and government red tape.

The most important issue for me is high property taxes.  As a part of this issue all expenses at the Township level need to be carefully examined and an overall reduction at least 5% must be achieved.  The people of Bloomfield need a taxpayer advocate on the Township Council.  I will be such an advocate.

Bloomfield needs creative ideas to help solve its present problems rather than more of the same. Please let me know how you feel about my ideas and tell me about yours. I can be reached at the following places:

Bring pride back to Bloomfield. On November 8, 2011, vote Line B (including B-10 for me). Thank you.

On Thursday night, October 27 a "Meet the Candidate" Forum will take place at Bloomfield College’s Van Fossan Theatre from 7:00 - 9:00 pm.  The public is invited to meet the local contestants running for the three ward council seats on the ballot in the November 8 general election.
