New Recycling Program Launches At Bloomfield High School

BLOOMFIELD, NJ — The Bloomfield Town Council recently partnered with the local high school’s environmental club to introduce a recycling initiative.
According to a news release from the township, the effort “aims to instill environmentally conscious habits” among students and faculty by placing 16 new, separate recycling containers in each classroom of the science tower to help keep the commingled, paper and trash separate and easier to recycle.
Previously, the school only had commingled barrels in the halls and paper recycling baskets in the classrooms, which made the recycling process more difficult and disorganized.

At the request of the Environment Club, the new containers were purchased using funds from the township’s Municipal Tonnage Grant. The club was looking to improve recycling in the classrooms and are using the science wing as a starting point.
As the new recycling containers are placed in each classroom, the mayor, township council and school faculty plan to encourage students, faculty, and staff to actively participate in the initiative by properly sorting recyclable materials and educating their peers about the importance of recycling.

The introduction of separate recycling containers in each classroom of the science tower will provide a convenient and accessible way for students and teachers to recycle paper, plastics, and other recyclable materials. The township council has taken proactive steps to ensure proper collection and recycling processes are in place, working closely with waste management partners and providing educational materials to promote recycling best practices.
“We are thrilled to partner with Bloomfield High School to implement this recycling program in the science tower,” Mayor Michael Venezia said of the new program.
“By bringing recycling directly into the classroom, we can foster a culture of sustainability from an early age, and inspire students to make a positive impact on our environment,” Venezia said.
“By fostering a recycling-friendly environment we aim to cultivate a sustainable mindset among students,” agreed Councilman Nick Joanow, liaison to the Bloomfield recycling committee.
“This initiative not only reduces our environmental impact but also demonstrates the power of collaboration between local government and educational institutions in making a lasting difference,” Joanow added.
Bloomfield High School Principal Chris Jennings said the initiative is an excellent opportunity for students to “practice environmental stewardship.”
“We are grateful to the Bloomfield Township Council for their support and look forward to the positive impact this program will have on our students and community,” Jennings said.
