PHOTOS: Five New Fire Captains Sworn In

The swearing-in ceremony was the highlight of the May 21 Bloomfield Township Council meeting.

 

Five new fire captains were sworn in at the May 21 Township Council meeting.  Bloomfield’s newest captains are:

In a joyful ceremony in council chambers Monday night, the men, wearing formal uniforms and surrounded by family members, stood on the dais with township officials.  Placing one gloved hand on the Bible, each fire captain was sworn in. Afterward, they shook hands with members of the township council and returned to friends and family in the audience amidst much cheering.

 

Other business:

--Council members voted 4-2 to appoint Bloomfield resident Carlos Pomeras to a position in the Parking Authority.  Mayor McCarthy and Councilman Hamilton voted against Pomeras’ appointment.  Councilman Carlos Bernard was absent.

--The council unanimously voted to appoint Linda Mallone as Personnel Director for the township. 

--At Mayor McCarthy’s request, Bloomfield Recreation Department Director Mike Scuerman made a presentation to the council outlining how the Rec Department, led by nine board members, serves the township. 

“As our program slogan says, it’s not just sports,” said Scuerman.  Among the many services that are provided, he listed summer camp for needy kids, senior citizen bus lines, Youth Week, summer concerts and Bicentennial activities.

“Our department raised $47,000 this year to fund free programs for the community,” he said.

 

Proclamations: 

-- “Youth Week – Government Day 2012” was marked by a visit from Bloomfield High School students.  Earlier in the day, the students had visited various municipal officers to see how town government operated.  At Monday night’s council meeting, the students were awarded certificates for their participation by  Mayor McCarthy.

-- May was proclaimed Jewish America Heritage Month.
