6 Teaching Positions, 2 Supervisors To Be Cut From Brick Schools

The board will be asked to approve the plan Tuesday night, along with pulling $1.35 million from surplus to cover the state aid cut.

BRICK, NJ — The Brick Township Board of Education will be asked to approve staff cuts and the use of additional surplus to cover a $1.9 million reduction in state aid when the board meets at 7 p.m. Tuesday.

The meeting will be held at the district's Professional Development Center.

The staff cuts include the humanities supervisor, the science supervisor, a high school teacher, two resource room teachers, a bilingual education teacher and two elementary school teachers.

The district had to come up with a plan to absorb the loss of $1,913,022 in state aid for the 2018-19 school year, after Gov. Phil Murphy signed into law S2 last week.

Though the state Department of Education website lists the cut at $1,162,224, that number does not include the $750,798 that was cut in the 2017-18 budget deal — money that was later restored to Brick following an appeal to the state.

The staff cuts total a cut of $564,746, the district said in information with the meeting agenda. The remainder will be made up through the use of an additional $1,348,276 from the district's surplus.
