Body In Point Pleasant Beach ID'd As Missing Boater

The body of Derek Narby, 21, was found on Saturday, New Jersey State Police confirmed, nine days after his family's boat capsized.

POINT PLEASANT BEACH, NJ — A 21-year-old man from Brick Township who had been missing for more than a week has been positively identified as the person whose body washed up in Point Pleasant Beach on Saturday, New Jersey State Police announced Tuesday evening.

Derek Narby, who had been missing since his family's boat capsized near the mouth of Manasquan Inlet on the evening of Sept. 14, is the person was found on Channel Drive on Saturday, Detective Jeffrey Lebron said.

"The cause of the incident remains under investigation and there is no additional information available at this time," Lebron said Tuesday night.

Authorities had been searching for Narby by air and by boat since the 31-foot Aquasport went under went it was swamped by a large wave about 8:30 p.m. on Sept. 14. Two people on board, identified by Manasquan Mayor Edward Donovan as Narby's father and brother, were rescued from the inlet that night.

Crews searched from north of Manasquan Inlet to as far south as Seaside Heights, where pieces of the boat washed up on Sept. 16. Friends created a memorial on the Point Pleasant Beach side of the inlet with a simple message, "Help Guide Derek Home" and the 2020 Brick Memorial graduate was being honored by the Brick Little League with a tribute book for people to write messages and memories for his family.
