Brick Announces Tentative Live High School Graduation Dates

The live graduations, limited by Gov. Phil Murphy's order on public gatherings, are subject to changing information from the state.

BRICK, NJ — As Brick Township prepares for its virtual graduations on Friday, the school district has announced its tentative plans for live graduations in July.

The district had plans for potential in-person graduations prepared, awaiting information from Gov. Phil Murphy on the possibility of holding the live celebrations. Murphy announced June 9 that the limit on public gatherings would increase to 500 as of July 3, making in-person graduation ceremonies possible.

The school district has tentatively scheduled the live graduations at Brick and Brick Memorial for July 8, with a rain date of July 9. Each school would have two ceremonies, one at 4 p.m. and one at 7 p.m., with the classes divided alphabetically. Each graduate would be allowed just two guests to meet the social distancing restrictions from the state, district officials said.

The school district is sending a survey to the senior classes at Brick and Brick Memorial on Monday to determine how many of the seniors will attend the live ceremonies, and the two people who will join the student for the ceremony. Students are asked to respond to the survey by June 22.

"Please be advised that this is an ever-evolving number and that we will keep you apprised of any changes as they occur," district officials said. Details regarding the procedures for the in-person graduations will be sent later, once the survey is complete.

The virtual ceremonies on Friday at 4 p.m. are the culmination of a number of efforts and events to celebrate the graduating class of 2020. Signs, caps and gowns and gifts were delivered to the seniors at both schools, and a last celebration with teachers and students in the parking lots, the Stang Stampede and the Dragon Drive — both first-time events — were held.

Superintendent Thomas Farrell said the district will continue to update parents and students on graduations, which have been disrupted by the coronavirus pandemic, and urged parents with questions to contact the high school principals.
