Brick Schools Tighten Rules For Early Pick-Ups, Forgotten Items

District officials want you to avoid dropping off forgotten items, and be prepared to show your ID often.

BRICK, NJ — If you are a parent or guardian of a Brick Township student, the district announced new rules for accessing the district's buildings that goes into effect this week.

In a letter distributed Friday, Acting Superintendent Dennis Filippone announced the new protocols for accessing school buildings.

For starters, he said, all visitors should have an appointment. "Please call ahead so we are prepared to meet with you."

Anyone who comes to the district's schools is required to show photo identification and state the purpose of their visit prior to being buzzed into the building. All doors will be locked; the only access to each building is the main entrance, which is also locked. Each visitor must report directly to the main office where that person will be required to show photo identification again, sign in, and obtain a visitor’s pass.

"It is imperative that visitors do not hold the door open for others behind them," Filippone said. "Each visitor must be screened individually through the buzzer system."

If you plan to pick your child up early, you must notify the office in writing prior to dismissal.

"If it is an emergency, call the office to notify the school," he said.

Parents are asked to avoid dropping off forgotten items such as lunch, lunch money, homework, sports equipment, etc. "Our students are more secure when there are fewer visits to our campus," Filippone said. Each school will have designated times for those instances where dropping items off is unavoidable, he said.

"We know that this protocol is more stringent than past practice and may inconvenience our parents and guardians who are, as always, welcome in our schools," Filippone said. "Please be assured that the safety of our students and staff is our highest priority. We appreciate your understanding and anticipated cooperation."
