Crash Causes Power Outage; Brick Walmart Registers Knocked Out Temporarily

Registers throughout the store were down initially Wednesday morning, a spokesperson said.

Brick Township police said a motor vehicle accident at Route 70 and Van Zile Road Tuesday evening knocked out power to homes and businesses in the area, including the nearby Walmart, but caused only a minor injury.

The driver refused medical attention, Sgt. Larry Petrola said.

UPDATE, 12:30 p.m.: The issues with Walmart’s registers have been resolved and all of the front-end registers are working properly, Betsy Hardin, a corporate spokeswoman, said.

PREVIOUSLY: Walmart has a messages for customers of the store on Route 70 near Van Zile Road in Brick: The store is open, and there are some registers working.

The store has been hampered Wednesday morning by computer issues affecting its front-end registers, said Betsy Hardin, a spokeswoman from Walmart’s corporate office.

“Our registers in sporting goods, electronics and lawn and garden are working,” she said. “We apologize for the inconvenience to our customers.”

The cause of the outage was unclear, but could be related to a motor vehicle accident that occurred late Tuesday evening and knocked out power to between 500 and 1,500 customers in the area, according to Jersey Central Power & Lights outage map. Residents in the area told the Brick Patch that power was restored to some homes by about midnight.

A Brick Township police watch commander said information would be released later today.
