Historic donation, the largest in the network's history and the largest of its kind in New Jersey healthcare, will expand Jersey Shore University Medical Center &mdash; and honor the late John K. Lloyd
September 14, 2026 &mdash; Iselin, NJ &mdash; Hackensack Meridian Health (HMH), New Jersey's largest and most comprehensive health network, today announced a transformational $125 million gift from an anonymous donor &mdash; the largest philanthropic commitment in the network's history, the largest gift of its kind in New Jersey healthcare, and among the largest donations to any hospital or health system in the United States.
The gift will advance HMH's mission to bring the best nationally ranked care closer to the people and communities it serves by expanding Jersey Shore University Medical Center. The donor, who has requested anonymity, has asked that the gift honor the legacy of the late John K. Lloyd by naming a pavilion at Jersey Shore University Medical Center in Neptune after him. A dedication ceremony will take place in the future. John K. Lloyd was a visionary leader who spent more than four decades building Jersey Shore University Medical Center into one of the nation's premier academic medical centers and served as co-CEO of HMH with Bob Garrett.&nbsp;
"In a year when the largest gifts in American healthcare have come from some of the most recognizable names in the country, someone chose to give $125 million and ask for nothing &mdash; no name on the building, no announcement, no recognition," said Robert C. Garrett, FACHE, chief executive officer of Hackensack Meridian Health. "They asked us to honor John Lloyd instead. That tells you everything about what this gift is really about. As a not-for-profit network, we put every dollar we receive right back into caring for our communities. The donor hopes this gift will inspire others to make philanthropy a priority. It arrives in the midst of the most ambitious fundraising effort in New Jersey healthcare history. The gift comes as HMH continues an unprecedented period of investment throughout the region.
Jersey Shore University Medical Center is the #1 hospital in Monmouth and Ocean counties, according to U.S. News &amp; World Report, and the only Level I adult and Level I pediatric trauma center in the area &mdash; the highest possible certification for trauma care. It is home to K. Hovnanian Children's Hospital, the #1 children's hospital in New Jersey, and to a Level III NICU, one of the highest levels of newborn intensive care.
As the fastest-growing hospital in New Jersey, Jersey Shore sees more than 100,000 emergency department visits each year and regularly operates at or near inpatient capacity. In response, HMH has committed more than $1 billion over 10 years through its Master Facility Plan for a new critical care tower, 24 new operating rooms, and expanded patient facilities.
HMH has also invested heavily in bringing care directly into the region, with large, multi-specialty Health &amp; Wellness Centers in Eatontown and Freehold, robust primary care in Howell, and an additional Health &amp; Wellness Center opening in Red Bank soon. Brick, N.J. - September 2, 2026 - Did you know that about 1 in 8 men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer during their lifetime? According to the <a href="https://www.cancer.org/cancer/types/prostate-cancer/about/key-statistics.html" rel="noopener nofollow" target="_blank">American Cancer Society</a>, it remains the second-leading cause of cancer death among American men. The numbers continue to climb, with the <a href="https://seer.cancer.gov/statfacts/html/prost.html" rel="noopener nofollow" target="_blank">National Cancer Institute</a> estimating that more than 333,000 new cases of prostate cancer will be diagnosed in the United States this year alone.
While these statistics may sound daunting, <a href="https://www.getcare.hackensackmeridianhealth.org/provider/mina-m-fam/1497224" rel="noopener nofollow" target="_blank">Mina Fam, M.D.</a>, medical director of urologic oncology at Hackensack Meridian Jersey Shore University Medical Center and medical director of robotic surgery Ocean University Medical Center, reminds us that most men diagnosed with prostate cancer do not die from it. He weighs in on the latest advancements in early detection and why your primary care doctor is your greatest asset.
Your Primary Care Doctor: The First Line of Defense
Prostate cancer continues to be one of the primary cancers impacting men today, but managing your risk doesn't have to be overwhelming. Dr. Fam notes that your primary care provider doctor is on the front lines of early detection.
"The primary care doctor is the one who knows the patient&rsquo;s medical history the best," shares Fam. Because men can sometimes be hesitant to bring up urinary or sexual health concerns, he encourages patients to be honest with their doctor about their fears and concerns when the topic of prostate health comes up.
While there was a brief period when the medical community drifted away from using the PSA (prostate-specific antigen) blood test to detect prostate cancer, it is once again a standard starting point for the screening process. &ldquo;The goal of the test isn&rsquo;t to overdiagnose but rather to establish a healthy baseline and catch any potential issues early,&rdquo; says Fam.
When Should You Get Screened?
&ldquo;Because every patient is different, screening timelines should be highly individualized through shared decision-making with your doctor,&rdquo; notes Fam. He breaks down the general guidelines:
<ul><li>Average risk: Men should begin screening discussions around age 50.</li><li>Higher risk: Black men and those with a family history of prostate cancer should start conversations at age 45.</li><li>Hereditary risk: Men with a known genetic predisposition, such as a BRCA mutation, should begin screening between ages 40 and 45.</li></ul>
Importantly, he points out, &ldquo;A PSA test isn't a simple &lsquo;pass or fail.&rsquo; It&rsquo;s the trend &ndash; how your PSA levels change over time &ndash; along with your age and prostate density, that is far more revealing than the absolute number on your lab report.&rdquo;
A High PSA Doesn&rsquo;t Always Mean a Biopsy
One of the most significant medical developments in recent years is how doctors handle an elevated PSA score. "In the past, anyone with an elevated PSA would get a prostate biopsy, but that&rsquo;s not the case anymore," Fam explains. &ldquo;Today, specialists utilize advanced MRI tests, alongside new blood and urine biomarkers, to accurately determine if a biopsy is truly necessary. If a biopsy is recommended, patients should know that technological advancements have made the procedure much safer and more comfortable. While doctors are always mindful of minimizing risks like sepsis, modern biopsies are not always the highly invasive or painful procedures men might fear.&rdquo;
A Diagnosis Doesn't Automatically Mean Surgery
Perhaps the biggest misconception men have about prostate cancer involves symptoms and treatments. Many men assume that sudden urinary issues mean they have cancer, but Fam clarifies that these symptoms &ldquo;frequently point to completely benign (non-cancerous) prostate conditions. In reality, early-stage prostate cancer often presents with no symptoms at all, which is why screening is so vital.&rdquo;
Furthermore, an early prostate cancer diagnosis doesn&rsquo;t automatically mean you will need aggressive treatments like radiation therapy or surgery, adds Fam. &ldquo;Depending on the specifics of the cancer, many men are excellent candidates for active surveillance, which is a safe strategy of closely monitoring the cancer without immediate medical intervention.&rdquo;

Brick, N.J. - August 31, 2026 - As the summer winds down, the familiar rhythm of the school year will soon begin &ndash; a great reminder to focus on safety. As emergency medicine physicians at K. Hovnanian Children's Hospital at Hackensack Meridian Jersey Shore University Medical Center, we've seen firsthand the types of accidents and injuries that can occur. By working together, we can ensure a safe and healthy return to school for our children.

On the Move: School Bus and Pedestrian Safety

The journey to and from school presents some of the most significant safety challenges. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), while school buses are the most regulated vehicles on the road and students are about 70 times more likely to get to school safely on a bus than by car, the most dangerous part of the journey is getting on and off the bus. From 2014 to 2023, there were 209 school-age children who died in school-bus-related crashes, and 79 of them were pedestrians.

For younger bus riders, it&rsquo;s best to be at the bus stop at least five minutes before the bus is scheduled to arrive. This reduces the need to rush, which can lead to accidents. Teach your children to stay at least 10 feet back from the curb &ndash; about three giant steps &ndash; and to never walk behind the bus. It is within that 10 foot area that kids are in the most danger of not being seen by the driver.

Once on the bus, children should find a seat and remain there. This minimizes distractions for the driver. For drivers, the start of the school year means being extra vigilant. In New Jersey, the law requires drivers to stop at least 25 feet away from a school bus with its red lights flashing. On a road with no physical divider, traffic in both directions must stop. Failure to do so can result in fines, license points, and, most importantly, a tragic accident.

With many children walking to school, pedestrian safety is a major concern. In 2023, 17% of children aged 14 and younger who were killed in traffic crashes were pedestrians, according to the NHTSA. Drivers must slow down in school zones and should be prepared to stop for children at crosswalks even if it&rsquo;s not during school hours.

Beyond the Commute: Backpacks and In-School Injuries

Safety doesn't stop at the school door. Two common issues we see are backpack-related injuries and head injuries. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends that a child's backpack should weigh no more than 10% to 20% of their body weight. A heavy backpack can cause back, neck, and shoulder pain. When choosing a backpack, look for one with wide, padded shoulder straps, a padded back, and a waist strap to help distribute the weight evenly. And while your child (especially older kids) may not think it looks cool, always encourage them to use both shoulder straps.

Head injuries are also a significant concern. These injuries can happen on the playground or during sports.&nbsp; According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, contact sports &ndash; including football, basketball, and soccer &ndash; are associated with <a href="https://www.cdc.gov/mmwr/volumes/69/wr/mm6927a4.htm" rel="noopener nofollow" target="_blank">45% of all emergency department visits</a> for sports- and recreation-related traumatic brain injuries and concussions among children ages 17 and under. While injuries can range from a minor cut on the head to more extreme cases that can cause bleeding on the brain or coma, it's crucial to seek medical attention any time a child has a blow to the head &ndash; and especially if they show signs of confusion, headache, or vomiting. Ensuring proper head and safety gear will help reduce your child&rsquo;s risk of injury.

Back-to-School Safety Reminders from Hackensack Meridian Children’s Health

An Essex County home inspector has built a free website that lets anyone look up the public records behind a New Jersey property &mdash; building permits, flood zones, fire history, property taxes, and more &mdash; by typing in an address.
The site, Permit &amp; Parcel (oprasearch.app), covers all 564 New Jersey municipalities and pulls only from official sources: state and county databases, FEMA flood maps, and the towns' own municipal codes. There's no account, no email capture, and no cost.
"I kept watching buyers fall in love with a house before anyone checked the paper trail &mdash; the open permits, the flood zone, what the town actually requires when a home changes hands," said Leo Betancor, a Certified Master Inspector based in Cedar Grove and the founder of the site. "All of that is public record. It just wasn't in one place anyone could actually use."
Alongside the main lookup, the site includes free single-purpose tools: a lead-safe inspection lookup showing which of the two state-required inspection methods each town uses under New Jersey's lead paint law, a searchable directory of every DCA-certified lead evaluation and abatement contractor sorted by distance, a fire-incident map built from more than 40 years of state fire records, and a radon map covering every municipality.
A companion site, njflood.zone, gives instant FEMA flood-zone answers for any New Jersey address &mdash; built after the federal government shutdown left FEMA's own map site unreliable &mdash; running on the site's own servers with the complete flood map data for the state loaded locally.
The project was recently featured in <a href="https://www.tapinto.net/towns/east-hanover-slash-florham-park/columns/at-home-with-holly/articles/deep-dive-conversations-what-the-house-won-t-tell-you" target="_blank" rel="noopener nofollow">TAPinto</a>'s "At Home with Holly" column.
