WALL, NJ — A Wall Township man was "under the influence of intoxicating substances" when he hit a Brick Township grandfather's vehicle head-on in June 2021, killing him, authorities said Thursday.

Nolan T. Dickson, 27, has been charged with second-degree vehicular homicide and third-degree causing death while operating a motor vehicle with a suspended license, authorities said. A probable cause affidavit says he was determined to be under the influence of multiple narcotics and marijuana.

Dickson was driving a 2019 BMW430i on Route 35 south just north of Lakewood Road shortly after 10 a.m. on June 27, 2021, when he rear-ended a 2019 Honda CRV and then crossed into the northbound lane and hit a 2017 Toyota Camry driven by Paul Yuro head-on, Wall Lt. Chad Clark said.

Yuro, 82, was taken to Jersey Shore University Medical Center with severe injuries from the crash and later died, Clark said.

Yuro, who was born and raised in Linden, had operated several gas stations in Woodbridge and Central Jersey but he sold the business in the late 1980s, according to his obituary. He started Yuro Painting LLC with his son William and was still working at the time of his death.

His obituary said Yuro enjoyed wintering in Florida along with his wife of 59 years, Carol, and spending time with his family. He was survived by his children, Donna Fitzpatrick and her husband David, Paul A. Yuro and his wife Lisa, William Yuro and his wife Christina, and Michael Yuro and his girlfriend Corrine Redman, and a brother, Andrew Lenart. Yuro was predeceased by grandson Colin Baubles in 2008 and was the cherished grandfather of 11 grandchildren. Orender Funeral Home handled the arrangements.

The crash investigation found that Dickson, whose driver's license was suspended, was driving recklessly and was under the influence of intoxicating substances at the time of the crash, Clark said. Dickson also was injured and was treated at Jersey Shore University Medical Center, police said.

Authorities did not say what those substances were. Patch has requested additional information.

The crash was investigated by the Monmouth County Serious Collision Analysis Response Team, the Monmouth County Prosecutor's Office Fatal Accident Investigation Unit, and the Wall Township Police Department.

Monmouth County Assistant Prosecutor Meghan Doyle is handling the case. Dickson is represented by Mitchell Ansell, Ocean Township.
