State police identified the victim in the Brick Township accident as James Leidner, 27, of Red Bank. The driver and passenger of a dump truck had minor and not serious injuries.

The fatal accident happened on the Garden State Parkway northbound side in Brick early Thursday, just north of Exit 91B, according to state transportation officials.

The accident happened around 2:46 a.m. at mile marker 93.7 when a 2013 Kia sedan rear-ended a dump truck, police said.

The driver of the Kia, Leidner, sustained fatal injuries, while the two occupants of the truck suffered minor life-threatening injuries, police said. Two lanes were shut down for about three hours, reopening around 6 a.m.

The accident happened just hours after a five-car fatal accident took place on the Parkway around 7:30 p.m. in Clark. The cause of the crash is still under investigation, state police told Patch.

Both directions were closed as a result, with the northern lanes reopening around 8:10 p.m., NJ.com reported.

As of 8 p.m., delays stretched for three miles, with traffic spilling over to local roads.

One person was killed after a tractor-trailer flipped over and landed on another vehicle, authorities said.

The accident occurred in the southbound lanes of Interstate 295 in Pennsville around 6:15 p.m., according to NJ.com. The accident closed the highway heading south for more than six hours.

The trailer section of the truck overturned near milepost 1.2 on the highway and landed on the front end of a Nissan pickup truck, trapping the driver inside, according to the report.
