Fire Forces 130 People From Brick's Conway Apartments: Police

Three people were hospitalized Friday night, 50 are in temporary shelter, police said. Low-income seniors and disabled live at the complex.

BRICK, NJ — Fifty people remain in temporary housing after an apartment fire at the George Conway Towers building at the Brick Housing Authority forced 130 people out of their homes Saturday night, Brick Township police said.

Three people were injured and taken to the hospital as a result of the fire at the apartment building, which houses low-income seniors and those with disabilities. One person suffered minor burns and smoke inhalation, and two others were taken to the hospital with cardiac conditions, Brick Capt, David Forrester said.

The cause of the fire in a fourth-floor apartment has not yet been determined, he said.

Police received multiple 911 calls at 10:22 p.m. for a report of a heavy smoke condition at the apartment building at 165 Chambersbridge Road. Firefighters found the apartment fully engulfed in flames and were able to extinguish the fire, he said. The Conway Towers sustained a lot of water damage and the building is not being reoccupied at the present time, Forrester said.

While many of the 130 residents evacuated Friday night were were picked up by family and friends, the Red Cross and Salvation Army are providing temporary shelter to 50 residents, Forrester said.

Brick Township Police, Fire and EMS units responded, Forrester said. Brick Police EMS posted a note on Facebook late Saturday evening thanking the many agencies that assisted with the evacuation and helping residents.
