MANCHESTER, NJ — A Newark man was injured Monday when he crashed his dirt bike while riding at the former Heritage Minerals property illegally, Manchester police said Tuesday.

Deivid Barbosa-Pereira, 22, of Newark, was thrown from the dirt bike and was found lying in a wooded area away from the bike, Manchester Lt. James Komsa said. Barbosa-Pereira was flown to Jersey Shore University Medical Center in Neptune for treatment of extensive leg injuries, Komsa said.

Police were called to the Heritage Minerals site, also known as ASARCO, at 2:48 p.m., Komsa said. The parcel is private property and no trespassing signs are posted.

Komsa said Barbosa-Pereira was riding an orange 2019 KTM 250 dirt bike, which was found on the ground. The investigation found he was riding the dirt bike when he lost control and hit a tree, which threw him from the bike. Barbosa-Pereira was wearing a motorcycle helmet at the time of the crash, Komsa said.

EMTs and firefighters from the Manchester Township Division of Emergency Medical Services, Whiting Volunteer Fire Department Fire Police, firefighters from the Ridgeway Volunteer Fire Department and Manchester Volunteer Fire Department, and paramedics from Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital responded.

Patrolman Conner Yatauro is investigating the crash, but the preliminary investigation shows unsafe operation of the dirt bike was the contributing factor, Komsa said.
