Man Sought In Cop-Dragging Incident In Brick In Custody: Police
The man has sped away from a motor vehicle stop, police said.

BRICK, NJ — A Brick Township man who was being sought after he dragged a police officer as he sped off during a motor vehicle stop last week is in custody, Brick police said Friday.
John Carter, 34, turned himself in to the Ocean County Sheriff‘s Department on Friday, Sgt. Neal Pedersen said, and is being processed on the charges.
Sgt. Erik Olsen suffered an arm injury in the incident, Pedersen said, but refused medical attention.

Olsen pulled over a beige BMW 740I in the area of Harris Ave just off Burnt Tavern Road about 10 p.m. Monday, Pedersen said. He identified himself as a police officer and obtained the man's driver's credentials, which identified the driver as Carter, he said.
Patrolman Ryan Talty arrived and he and Olsen they instructed Carter to get out of the car because he had two outstanding warrants from Brick Township Municipal Court, Pedersen said.

Carter refused, and locked the car door, and Olsen reached into the open window to try to grab the inner door handle and open the door, he said. At that point, Carter put the car in drive and sped off, catching Olsen's arm in the window frame in the process, he said.
Carter dragged Olsen about 50 feet before Olsen was able to free himself, Pedersen said.
Carter also was arrested in August 2015 on drug charges after police found 170 bags of heroin in his home along with 12 pit bulls while executing a search warrant following an investigation.
Carter has been charged with resisting arrest, aggravated assault, obstruction of justice, hindering apprehension, reckless driving, careless driving, disregard of a stop sign and maintenance of lamps, Pedersen said. Bail was set at $75,000 full by Municipal Court Judge Joseph Grisanti.
