New Details In Brick Police Shooting: Suspect Fired Multiple Times, Prosecutor Says

Breaking: There were 7 calls to 911; daughter, mother assaulted, and sister, 3 kids barricaded in a bedroom to avoid assault, OCPO said.

BRICK, NJ — A Brick Township man who died after exchanging gunfire with police early Sunday morning beat up one woman, assaulted her mother, caused them to barricade themselves in a bedroom before she climbed out a window and ran to a neighbor's home for help during the incident.

Those were just some of the details released Monday afternoon by the Ocean County prosecutor's office in an update on the investigation into a police-involved shooting in the Midstreams section of Brick.

Keshawn Wilson, 32, was identified as the man killed in the incident, said Al Della Fave, spokesman for the prosecutor's office.

Wilson lived at the Meridian Drive home where the incident took place, Della Fave said. Four Brick Township police officers responded at 5:33 a.m. Sunday after the police department received seven calls to 911 from neighbors, six of them reporting a disturbance and one reporting a domestic assault, he said.

The four police officers have not been identified.

All four officers arrived and approached the residence together, where they encountered Wilson, who was armed with a handgun, resulting in the officers discharging their service weapons, Della Fave said. The exchange of gunfire resulted in the death of Wilson. No officers were struck, however all four were transported to an area hospital for evaluation, he said.

Witness accounts, the investigation and forensic evidence confirmed Wilson was armed with a loaded 6-inch revolver when police encountered him, Della Fave said. It also is confirmed Wilson fired multiple rounds from the revolver during the course of the events, he said.

Della Fave said that once Wilson was down, police went into the home and learned the 31-year-old woman and her 59-year-old mother had been assaulted. Both were taken to Ocean Medical Center in Brick for treatment, he said. Also in the house was the woman's 31-year-old sister and the sister's three children, ages 11, 7 and 11 months old, Della Fave said. Her sister and the three children did not suffer any physical injuries that required hospital treatment.

The 31-year-old woman was assaulted first, Della Fave said, and she suffered lacerations and contusions to her head, eye and body, he said. Her mother tried to come to the woman's aid and suffered an injury to her head, Della Fave said.

As the woman tried to get away from Wilson, she fell down a flight of stairs and suffered additional injuries, Della Fave said.

Once downstairs, the woman, her sister and her mother barricaded themselves in a bedroom with the 11-month-old, Della Fave said. The woman then climbed out a bedroom window and ran to a neighbor's home for help, he said.

Della Fave said the investigation regarding the confrontation between Wilson and the responding officers is still ongoing but said it appears that all four officers fired their service weapons during the exchange.

No further information will be provided today. Media and the public will receive updates as more details are confirmed. The Ocean County Prosecutor’s Major Crimes Unit is the lead investigation agency, with assistance from the Ocean County Sheriff’s Department CSI and the Ocean County Medical Examiner, Della Fave said.
