BRICK, NJ — The Brick Township Board of Education has appointed Alison Kennedy to fill a vacancy on the school board that arose when a board member moved out of state.

Missy Parker, who was elected to the board in 2020, resigned her seat as of Aug. 1 when her family moved to Georgia because of a change in her husband's employment.

Parker was elected to the board in 2020 and her term ends Dec. 31, 2023. The board had to appoint someone to fill Parker's seat because her resignation came after the July 25 deadline for school board candidate filings.

The board received nine resumes, and on Sept. 19 held interviews. Among the applicants interviewed were Walter Campbell, who served on the board previously, and Mary Lou Powner, who served on the Brick Township Council from 1992-1999. Powner also has been heavily involved with Brick Township's and the state's efforts to fight drug and alcohol use by children and teens, serving for 13 years as the executive director of the Governor's Council on Alcoholism and Drug Abuse. The board also interviewed Justin Delaney, Greg Williams and Maria Whelan. Two other applicants were not present for the interviews.

Kennedy has served as the president of the Veterans Memorial Middle School Parent-Teacher Association for four years. She said she has a business background and currently works in another school district.
