On its website, the school says it is "a state approved, private school that specifically educates multiply handicapped, underpriviledged children with special needs." The Press report said the school has come under scrutiny because a significant percentage of the students referred there by the Lakewood school district come from Orthodox homes.
The school, which got its start in 1995, according to the school's website, is nonsectarian -- a requirement for private schools to receive taxpayer-funded student referrals.

Tuition at the school is more than $97,000 per year, a rate set by the New Jersey Department of Education, the Press report said.
