'More Lies': NJ Lawmakers Respond To Trump's $1.3 Trillion Promise

President Donald Trump pledged to give every adult American $5,000, but only if Republicans retain control of Congress after the midterms. New Jersey lawmakers say the offer, while the first of its kind, echoes other promises made by the president.

During Trump's keynote speech on Wednesday at the GOP's inaugural midterm convention in Dallas, he offered cash to Americans to vote red.

"I can make this promise to you, and here is my promise," he said. "If the Republicans win the House of Representatives and the United States Senate, both of them, because of our... tremendous economic success, like in history, we've never had anything like what's happening. But because of our tremendous strength and success economically, I will issue a dividend to every adult citizen in the United States of America for $5,000."

The President likened the concept to a business giving a cash distribution to shareholders. He calls it a "Trump Dividend."

If the plan were to actually go through, it would cost roughly $1.35 trillion. Trump made no indication of where the money would come from, as the country is in a $1.8 trillion deficit. He also told CBS that the move would not need congressional approval.

This isn't the first time Trump has made promises to Americans to put cash in their wallets.

Last year, Trump promised Americans a $5,000 DOGE dividend that never materialized and was ultimately scrapped. DOGE itself, the Department of Government Efficiency, was a Trump initiative that was shut down and reportedly wasted billions of dollars.

He also floated the idea of providing every American with a $2,000 tariff dividend in the past, a check millions of Americans are still waiting on.

Trump's track record of failing to deliver on these payments is the main point of criticism from national officials, including one in the Garden State.

"First it was a 'DOGE dividend.' Then it was a tariff refund. Now it’s $5,000 to buy your vote," said Senator Andy Kim. "These are more lies. Under Trump, our health care costs and gas prices are skyrocketing."

Also chiming in on Trump's promise is longtime critic Bernie Sanders, who called the president a "pathological liar" and made a list of Trump's unmet pledges.

"Now, after all those lies, Trump wants you to believe that he will give every American adult a $5,000 check — but only if the Republicans win the midterms," Sanders posted on X. "No. I don't think so. The Trump Administration is not about helping working families."

Even on the other side of the aisle, Republicans were caught off guard by the President's unprecedented offer. Some told the Independent that, "It won't happen."

However, U.S. Sen. Bernie Moreno, of Ohio, is reportedly drafting legislation to fund President Donald Trump’s new promise.

Specifics on whether there will be income requirements, when these payments will come through, if they come through at all, remain to be seen.
