Brick Memorial Student Charged With Terroristic Threat: Police

Numerous students reported the threats by the 15-year-old student, who was suspended from school, police said.

BRICK, NJ — (Updated, 8:15 p.m.) A 15-year-old male student at Brick Memorial was arrested Tuesday and suspended from school after he threatened others at the school, Brick Township police said Tuesday evening.

The student was not further identified because he is a juvenile.

Brick Capt. David Forrester said police were called at 10:40 a.m. after "numerous students at Brick Memorial High School told faculty that a fellow student made threats of violence toward others in the school."

The student was arrested and charged with making a terroristic threat, Forrester said. He did not describe the nature of the threat.

Forrester reiterated what Acting Superintendent Dennis Filippone had said earlier in the afternoon, that "students and staff were never in any danger during the incident."

"All I can say is that there was an incident involving a student who made a threat. The administration and the police were involved and no students were ever in danger," Filippone said.

Last month, Brick Memorial's gymnasium was packed with its students and 150 students from Brick Township High School for a student-led town hall on the issue of school safety, in the wake of the Feb. 14 mass shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida. Those attending were urged to speak up if they had a concern about a classmate or a student's behavior, and the students leading the town hall urged their classmates to take steps and follow the rules so everyone is safe.

"I know bizarre is considered normal these days," Police Chief James Riccio said at the town hall, "but sometimes bizarre isn't normal. If you have a concern, report it."
