BRICK, NJ -- A man was killed early Wednesday morning when the car he was driving hit a tractor trailer on the Garden State Parkway, New Jersey State Police said.

The crash resulted in the closure of the southbound lanes until about 9:30 a.m. and resulted in significant rubbernecking that led to a secondary accident in the northbound lanes shortly before 8 a.m., according to 511nj.org, the state Department of Transportation's highway traffic website.

Rubbernecking remained an issue in the area until late morning.
There was an additional crash reported in Wall and another one in Holmdel in the northbound lanes but those were quickly cleared.
PREVIOUSLY: Commuters traveling the Garden State Parkway Wednesday morning are facing a difficult ride as multiple accidents have caused closures and traffic backups, according to reports.
A crash with an overturned vehicle that happened before 5:30 a.m. in the area of Exit 90 resulted in the complete shutdown of the southbound lanes of the Parkway, which remained closed as of 8 a.m., according to the NJ Department of Transportation's site 511nj.org.
The Ocean County Sheriff's Office said via Nixle alert just before 8 a.m. that the southbound lanes will be closed in the area until further notice.
The resulting rubbernecking led to a crash with injuries on the northbound side in the same area about 7:30 a.m., 511nj.org reported. That crash is blocking the left shoulder, according to the site.
The jams are affecting traffic on nearby roads, with extra volume making travel slow on Route 9 through Toms River and Lakewood.
