4 Trucking Tips for Summer

With summer just about here and the temperatures starting to soar, it’s more important than ever to stay alert on the roads. Truckers in particular need to pay special attention to driving on the highways this season, as summer is a popular time for travel and things can get crowded. Check out these four summer trucking tips to keep yourself and other motorists safe.

1. Make Sure Your Tires are Properly Inflated

With the rise in temperatures, tires tend to inflate, which means the summer heat can cause tire blowouts. The added friction of inflated tires coming into contact with the hot road, combined with a high rate of speed, can result in dangerous tire blowouts.

Make sure your tires are properly inflated before heading out on a trip. Not only will this help prevent tire blowouts, it will also extend the lifespan of your tires.

2. Inspect Your Brakes

Temperature has a huge impact on your brakes. That’s because, when temperatures soar, you can lose friction in your brakes due to the fact that the brake components can’t adequately absorb the heat any longer. This is called brake fading.

This results in increased stopping distances and decreased brake life performance. Routine brake maintenance is critical, ensuring conditions such as brake fading don’t occur.

3. Anticipate More Traffic

From the 4th of July to Labor Day to summer vacations, the summer is chock full of holidays and vacations. Translation: there are many more people hitting the roads to get away for a bit. Indeed, there are more people traveling the roads in summer than at any other time of the year. Prepare for this increased traffic, bring your patience, and stay alert.

4. Shield Yourself From the Sun

As a trucker, you probably don’t realize how much sun exposure you are getting while driving. But failing to protect your skin from the harmful UV rays of the sun can lead to an increased risk for skin cancer. Statistics reveal that truckers have a higher rate of skin cancer, particularly melanoma, than other people, with 75 percent of those skin cancers occurring on the left side of the body. This is where truckers tend to rest their arms out the window.

Do your part to prevent excessive UV ray exposure: wear sunscreen, don a cap, and use window covers or a sun sleeve.
