Bridge Replacement Work Fully Closes Washington Valley Road

The full closure of the roadway with concrete barriers will impact emergency responders and school buses.

BRIDGEWATER, NJ — Bridge replacement work is the newest update to the ongoing Washington Valley Road (County Route 616) construction project.

Work on the bridge, located west of Van Nest Drive on Washington Valley Road, began on Thursday causing a full closure of the roadway with concrete barriers placed around the bridge.

This means that the concrete barricades cannot be opened for emergency services. Police and various emergency services agencies were notified of the change.

Additionally, school buses will also not be able to pass through the construction area for the bridge. Somerset County has been working with the Bridgewater Regional School District (BRSD) Transportation Department to figure out modified bus routes for the new school year. The BRSD will be announcing any changes to routes.

The bridge work includes the removal of the existing bridge and replacement with a new concrete box culvert.

Residents who live east of the bridge can continue to get onto their properties through Laurel Trail and Vosseller Avenue. Residents and businesses west of the bridge site will continue to access their properties from the Chimney Rock Road intersection until the bridge work is completed, around late September.

After the new bridge is completed, the full barricade will be moved to the west near #1997 Washington Valley Road.

Stage 2 work is also continuing on the road, west of Van Nest Drive to Chimney Rock Road, along with work at the intersection of Chimney Rock Road.

The work remains on schedule with the anticipate re-opening of Washington Valley Road to be in mid-October.
