Excessive Heat Advisory Issued For Somerset County Thursday

Breaking: Today is a good day to stay indoors as the National Weather Service has issued a heat advisory for Somerset County through 9 p.m.

SOMERSET COUNTY, NJ — Today is a good day to stay indoors as the National Weather Service has issued a heat advisory for Somerset County.

The advisory is in effect from 11 a.m. Thursday to 9 p.m. this evening. Temperatures are expected to reach between 97 and 102. The hottest temperatures will occur during the afternoon.

As of result of the possibility of heat and humidity causing heat stress during outdoor exertion or extended exposure, the NWS offers these suggestions:

  • Drink plenty of fluids
  • Stay in an air-conditioned room
  • Stay out of the sun
  • Check on relatives and neighbors
  • Wear lightweight and loose-fitting clothing
  • Young children and pets should never be left unattended in vehicles under any circumstances
  • If you work outside, take frequent rest breaks in shaded or air conditioned environments. "This is especially true during warm or hot weather when car interiors can reach lethal temperatures in a matter of minutes."

Showers and thunderstorms are possible tonight which will bring temperatures down for Friday. Here is a look ahead at the weather forecast.

Tonight: Scattered showers and thunderstorms. Some of the storms could produce gusty winds and heavy rain. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 72. West wind around 5 mph becoming calm in the evening. Chance of precipitation is 50 percent. New rainfall amounts between a half and three quarters of an inch possible.

Friday: A chance of showers before 9 a.m., then a chance of showers and thunderstorms between 9 a.m. and 11 a.m., then showers likely and possibly a thunderstorm after 11 a.m. Some of the storms could produce heavy rainfall. Cloudy, with a high near 79. Calm wind becoming east around 6 mph in the afternoon. Chance of precipitation is 70 percent. New rainfall amounts between a half and three quarters of an inch possible.

Friday Night: Scattered showers and thunderstorms. Cloudy, with a low around 67. Light east wind. Chance of precipitation is 50 percent. New rainfall amounts between a tenth and quarter of an inch, except higher amounts possible in thunderstorms.

Saturday: A chance of showers before 8 a.m. Partly sunny, with a high near 85. Calm wind becoming northwest 5 to 9 mph in the morning. Chance of precipitation is 30 percent. New precipitation amounts of less than a tenth of an inch possible.

Saturday Night: Mostly clear, with a low around 64.

Sunday: Mostly sunny, with a high near 88.

Sunday Night: Partly cloudy, with a low around 66.
