February 18: NAIOP New Jersey Seminar will Focus on COAH and Crowdfunding

Affordable Housing Uncertainties and the Impact of Crowdfunding are Hot Topics

Recent actions (and inaction) on COAH by state government and the courts continue to cast a shadow of uncertainty on how cities and developers are functioning regarding affordable housing obligations. Meanwhile, crowdfunding is growing at an annual rate of 74 percent – what does it mean for commercial real estate? On Wednesday, February 18, NAIOP New Jersey, the commercial real estate development association, will present a seminar on those key topics. The event will take place at the NJ Center of Excellence in Bridgewater, N.J.

Peter J. Cocoziello of Advance Realty will lead a discussion on COAH featuring Kevin Moore of Sills Cummis & Gross, Thomas Carroll of Hill Wallack, and Michael Cerra of the NJ League of Municipalities. The experts will weigh in on how developers and cities are functioning with this uncertainty, what the courts can do (and possible scenarios), and potential legislative fixes to create an equitable and sustainable affordable housing mechanism for the state.

The internet has arrived in the capital formation business! Crowdfunding is a way to fund a project or venture by raising many small amounts of money from a large number of people, typically via the Internet. With an annual growth rate of 74%, crowdfunding has become a multi-billion dollar industry. What is the impact on commercial real estate of disintermediating institutional lenders? How does NJ compare to other states on access to crowdfunding? Those questions will be answered by Mark Roderick (Flaster/Greenberg PC), one of the leading crowdfunding lawyers in the United States, and Dan Miller, co-founder of Fundrise, the leading commercial real estate crowdfunding platform, which has raised and invested about $60 million in over 50 deals since 2012.
