NEW JERSEY — The message for New Jersey residents to get vaccinated and boosted continues to be a reoccurring theme as Gov. Phil Murphy points to low breakthrough COVID-19 cases.

"Go out and get it, folks. It's easy. If you are eligible get boosted," said Murphy during a news conference on Monday.

Murphy said that just almost 5.9 million New Jersey residents are fully vaccinated against COVID-19. Of those residents, there have been 54,260 total breakthrough cases or 0.92 percent linked to the fully vaccinated.

"We know the vaccines continue to prove themselves against the Delta variant, which remains the predominant strain here in New Jersey and elsewhere in the country. This fact is born out of the data on breakthrough infections," said Murphy.

The percentage of breakthrough cases remains under 1 percent in New Jersey but grew from .78 percent to .92 percent since Oct. 17.

Here is a breakdown of the breakthrough cases among the fully vaccinated from Jan. 19 to Nov. 15:

  • 5,876,553 total fully vaccinated individuals
  • 54,260 total breakthrough cases (0.92%)
  • 1,160 fully vaccinated individuals requiring hospitalization for COVID (0.02%)
  • 314 COVID-related deaths among fully vaccinated (0.005%)

"Not only are those who are fully vaccinated showing strong resistance to the virus their odds of a COVID-related hospitalization or death are even further minimized," said Murphy.

Looking at the recent numbers from Nov. 8 to Nov. 14, fully vaccinated individuals accounted for around 20 percent of the positive tests statewide:

  • 3,116 positive tests (Statewide Total: 12,138)
  • 16 COVID-related hospitalizations (Statewide COVID+ Hospitalizations: 602)
  • 1 COVID-related death (Statewide Total: 85)

"We know that for some the initial vaccine courses have begun to wane in terms of preventing infection but effectiveness for keeping these same folks out of the hospital or the morgue, god forbid, continues to prove the importance of that initial vaccination," said Murphy. "And it speaks to the even greater and more immediate importance of getting that booster."
