Here's How Many Hate Crimes Were In Bridgewater In 2018

BRIDGEWATER, NJ — As New Jersey is still coming to grips with the horrific shooting deaths of six people in Jersey City, here is a look at the number of hate crimes reported in Bridgewater, according to new FBI data.

The FBI recently published its "Hate Crimes Statistics" report, showing that nearly every county in New Jersey had incidents of crimes that were fueled by hate toward race, religion, sexual orientation, disability, gender and gender identity.

Bridgewater reported having two hate crimes based on sexual orientation and Race/Ethnicity/Ancestry in 2018 which equates to .44 percent per 10,000 people in the town. Bridgewater ranked as 142nd out of the 172 towns to have reported hate crimes.

The 2018 report is slightly more than in previous years where Bridgewater reported having one hate crime in 2017, zero in 2016 and one in 2015.

The towns with highest number from 2018 data included suburban communities such as Deal in Monmouth County, which had the second highest number per capita in the state, and Sea Girt, also in Monmouth, which was ninth.
