"These criminals are trained how to ascertain if a key fob is left inside a parked vehicle from a distance away. Keeping your vehicle locked also helps prevent your car from being burglarized," wrote police.
Additionally, residents are reminded not to leave their vehicles running unattended, even in their driveway.

"During the cold months, drivers commonly warm up their vehicles before leaving their residence. However, criminals also know this and look for these opportunities. Even if the key fob is removed from a running vehicle, it can still be driven away," said police.
The best deterrent for residents is to lock their vehicles.
"We have found through our investigations that if the vehicle is locked the criminals will move on to other vehicles to locate an unlocked one. They are searching for easy targets. Please be vigilant to make yourself less of a victim by locking your car and removing the key or key fob," said police.
The police are asking the public for help to notify them of suspicious activity at 908-722-4111.
