Massive Route 22 Hotel, Restaurant Project Dead In Bridgewater
The 13 acres of land that have sat vacant for years on Route 22 will now see a new plan. See what is coming:

BRIDGEWATER, NJ — Plans to build hotels, restaurants, and retail on 13 acres of land off Route 22 East in Bridgewater have been scrapped.
Bridgewater Township Administrator Michael Pappas said during the Thursday Council meeting that the Mercedes-Benz dealership at 1250 Route 22 East recently acquired the land surrounding it. The land used to be home to a Days Inn.
"There had been a number of hotels and other commercial establishments that had been approved, "said Pappas at the meeting. "Site plan approval that had been granted. But they are at this point not moving forward."

In 2018, the Bridgewater Planning Board approved the plans to build two hotels, two restaurants at the site, according to Tapinto.net.
An amended plan was presented and approved at the end of 2024. However, the site has remained vacant for about eight years since the Days Inn was demolished.

The developer has since decided not to move forward with the approved plan and sold the property, said Bridgewater Public Information Officer Suzanne Maeder to Patch.
A specific reason for the decision was not known.
Pappas said that the owner of the Mercedes-Benz dealership "is likely looking to expand the dealership with perhaps a new structure."
Mayor Matthew Moench said he is excited for the new proposal, said Maeder.
Maeder added that the owners of the Mercedes-Benz have been great business owners, going so far as to mow the grass on the vacant lot.
The proposal now before the Township is described as a temporary step.
Pappas said the owner needs space to store vehicles for a short period of time until a full site plan application is submitted for a permanent arrangement.
Township Planner Katherine Sarmad has been working with Township Attorney Chris Corsini to draft an ordinance to allow for a temporary parking permit for this particular parcel.
The ordinance will be submitted to the Township Council for consideration at a later time.
