No Charges Filed After Bridgewater Girl, 11, Killed While Riding Bike

11-year-old Victoria Bastos was killed by a pickup truck while riding her bike on April 2. The investigation is under review by prosecutors.

BRIDGEWATER, NJ — It's been two months since 11-year-old Victoria Bastos was fatally hit by a pickup truck while riding her bike at a Bridgewater intersection.

Bridgewater Police have completed their investigation and the report has been forwarded to the Somerset County Prosecutor’s Office for review.

The report is not finalized until they complete their review and approve it, which could still take a bit longer, said Bridgewater Police Lt. Kevin Lamey to Patch.

Additionally, Lamey said, "there has still not been any charges filed against the driver at this time."

On Saturday, April 2, Maria A. Toribio, 22, of Bridgewater, was driving a 2021 GMC Sierra pickup truck north on Fulton Street when she hit a Bastos at the intersection of Fulton Street and 3rd Street, said Bridgewater Police Officer Kevin Florczak.

At 6:08 p.m., Bridgewater Township Police went to the scene and the girl was taken to Robert Wood Johnson Hospital Somerset where she was pronounced dead, said Florczak.

Additionally, this tragedy prompted one resident Maikol Vargas, who lives in the Finderne section of the township, to launch a petition to improve traffic safety in the area. Read More: Petition Looks To Improve Traffic Safety After Bridgewater Girl Killed

The petition has almost 3,000 signatures.

Residents also called on the township administration to make safety improvements to local roadways at the April 21 meeting.
