Patriots Hang On For 4-3 Win Over Road Warriors

The Somerset Patriots (8-3) defeated the Road Warriors (4-7) 4-3 in the first game of a day-night double header.

Bridgewater, NJ- The Somerset Patriots (8-3) defeated the Road Warriors (4-7) 4-3 in the first game of a day-night double header at TD Bank Ballpark on Wednesday afternoon.

With the game tied in the bottom of the sixth inning, the Patriots scored three runs on consecutive two-out singles by Yovan Gonzalez, Craig Massey, and Scott Kelly to make the score 4-1.

“It all started with [Aaron Dudley] getting that base knock and then [Mike Fransoso] with some incredible base running,” said Kelly. “Then Yovan with the big hit and Massey comes up big in his first game of the season. It really was a team effort and shows how ready everybody is at any time.”

The Road Warriors took a 1-0 lead in the top of the fourth inning on a solo home run by Geraldo Valentin (1).

The Patriots tied up the game in the bottom of the fifth inning on a wild pitch that allowed Kelly to score on Endy Chavez’s at bat.

The Road Warriors closed the gap with two solo home runs in the top of the seventh inning by Gustavo Pierre (2) and Alfredo Silverio (2) for the 4-3 final.

Chase Huchingson (1-0) earned the win with a scoreless inning pitched. Jose Ortega (0-1) suffered the loss, allowing three runs- two earned- on four hits in an inning pitched. Ryan Kelly picked up his second save of the season.
