To help homeowners protect their property and deter theft, the police are offering the following recommendations:

  1. Secure Placement- Position signs in well-lit areas that are visible from the street. Consider placing them closer to your home rather than at the curbs.
  2. Use Sturdy Materials- opt for more robust signs made of durable materials. Heavier signs may be more difficult to remove.
  3. Install Security Cameras- If possible, install security cameras or motion-activated lights near the area where signs are displayed. Visible cameras can deter potential thieves.
  4. Install Air tags- Air tags can be placed on the signs, thus tracking their locations of movement.
  5. Report Incidents- If your sign is stolen, report the incident to the police. Provide any relevant information, including descriptions of suspects or vehicles, which can aid investigations. This can be done by calling 908-722-4111.
  6. Engage Neighbors- Talk to your neighbors about the issue. Forming a community watch can help keep an eye out for suspicious activity in your area.
  7. Consider Alternative Displays- Use window decals or banners that are more difficult to remove than traditional lawn signs.
  8. Stay informed- Follow local news and community forums for updates regarding similar incidents in your area. Awareness can help you remain vigilant.

"The Bridgewater Police Department is committed to ensuring the safety and security of our community," said Mitzak.
