Route 28 Daytime Lane Closures Begin In Somerset, Union Counties
Construction is expected to continue over the next several months as the maintenance roadway improvement project begins.

SOMERSET/UNION COUNTY, NJ — Drivers in Somerset, Middlesex, and Union counties can expect daytime lane closures in both directions on Route 28 over the next several months as a maintenance roadway improvement project begins.
Construction will begin on Monday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. and continue daily Monday through Friday for the next several months.
Single lane closures will occur in both directions on Route 28 from Washington Street in Bound Brook, Somerset County to Hamilton Avenue in Plainfield, Union County.

Where Route 28 has two lanes in each direction, at least one lane will be maintained, in each direction. Where Route 28 has one lane in each direction, traffic will be maintained using traffic shifts.
The closures are necessary to upgrade ADA-compliant curb ramps, repair curbs and sidewalks, and improve traffic signals, according to the New Jersey Department of Transportation.

All driveways will be maintained during construction. On-street parking will not be permitted during work hours when needed.
Motorists are advised to slow down, use caution, and expect delays, when driving through the work zone.
This work is part of a $5.9 million federally funded maintenance project that will upgrade curb ramps to meet ADA compliance at various locations on Route 1, Route 28, Route 31, Route 206, and I-78 in Warren, Somerset, Middlesex and Union counties.
In addition to upgrading curb ramps, the project will repair curbs and sidewalks and make traffic signal improvements at various intersections within the project limits. This project is expected to be completed by fall 2025.
