RARITAN, NJ — The Bridgewater-Raritan School Board is looking for someone to fill a vacancy after Lucy Sandler announced her resignation.

"It is with an extremely heavy heart that I have to announce I will be resigning from the board of education... due to unforeseen circumstances in my personal life, I will be moving out of Raritan Borough and as such, I can not continue to serve," said Sandler at the May 10 Board of Education meeting.

Sandler's resignation will not go into effect until July 1 but she wanted to make the announcement sooner to give Raritan residents more time to apply.

"By announcing now this gives any applicant time not only time to apply to the Board but to also put themselves on the ballot for the election in November for the people of Raritan to formally elect," said Sandler.

Board President Steven Singer said, "we will be sad to see you go."

Singer noted that the board will appoint someone to fill Sandler's position for the remainder of 2022. If that candidate chooses they can also then place themself on the November ballot to continue to fill Sandler's term through 2023.

The board will have 60 days to appoint a replacement for Sandler following her resignation.

"I would like to take a moment to speak to the people of Raritan. If you aren't considering applying for this position you should be," said Sandler. "If you've ever wondered why things are the way they are? How all these seemingly silly rules came to be? How do governing bodies make decisions? How policies get passed and written? Or if you just want to know how much an industrial boiler or three costs to replace? You should consider applying and running for this position."

"To say that this experience has been an education would be an understatement. This has been one of the most challenging and rewarding things I have ever done in my life," said Sandler. "To my fellow young people of Raritan, challenge yourself to do something that matters. Get in the arena you won't regret it."
