‘So You Think You Can Dance’ Finalist Visits Bridgewater Studio

BRIDGEWATER, NJ — Young aspiring dancers at Spotlight Dance Academy of NJ in Martinsville were treated with a private workshop experience by “So You Can Think You Can Dance” finalist Megan “Megz” Alfonso.

Alfonso, of Long Island, New York, placed in the top six of season 12 of Fox’s television dance competition show.

All of the students were able to dance with Alfonso, take a photo with her and get an autograph.

“It was amazing,” said Catherine Helft, owner of the Bridgewater studio. “Alfonso didn’t present herself as a celebrity. She was very down to earth and humble. She was awesome with the kids and a great teacher, along with being a great dancer and choreographer.”

Two workshops were offered to the dancers on Sept. 16 — a contemporary dance and hip-hop class.

“By having her here it makes the kids realize this is something more attainable than just seeing it on TV,” Heldt said.

Heldt opened her dance studio in March and offers workshops with professionals between one to two times a month. Professionals include Broadway dancers, Broadway choreographers, Brooklyn Nets dancers and more.

Next month she will have Robert Taylor Jr. who is going to be performing in the new Broadway Musical, “Spongebob Squarepants.”
