Press release from the Somerville Elks:

June 13 2020

Flag Day is celebrated by every Lodge of the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks in the United States. The Elks prompted President Woodrow Wilson to recognize the Order's observance of Flag Day for its patriotic expression. But it was not until 1949 when President Harry Truman, himself a member of the Elks, made the proclamation that thereafter June 14 would be a day of national observance for the symbol of our country. To commemorate Flag Day, each Lodge will present a program about the history of the flag and the importance to our nation and its people. Continuing that tradition, the Officers of Somerville Lodge performed the ceremony Monday night with the assistance of members of Boy Scout Troop 154 of Pluckemin. The Elks Flag Day event has been held at the Somerset County Courthouse in the past several years, with participants of many of our community groups, but the current regulations, forced to officers of Somerville Lodge to perform this year before the video cameras, while observing social distancing. The result will be broadcast on YouTube on June 14th.
