Spruce Run Remains Closed Thursday To Swimmers

CLINTON, NJ — Spruce Run in Hunterdon County remains closed Thursday to swimmers due to water quality, the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection reported. The reservoir closed on Monday.

The water quality is tested every day by the NJ DEP for bacteria levels and when they are too high the reservoir will close. The reservoir will remain closed until tests pass the benchmark. Locals can check back on Spruce Run's website here to see when the reservoir is cleared for swimming.

Typically the water quality may fail a test due to a number of factors including storm water runoff, fecal matter from birds or geese, or a general goose problem in and around the water, said Larry Hajna, spokesman for DEP.

In the meantime the DEP has expanded the number of lifeguards at nearby Round Valley because they expect more people to be going over there, Hajna said.

Two other lakes in New Jersey closed earlier in the week including Hopatcong State Park in Sussex County (which reopened on Wednesday) and Deal Lake in Monmouth County, which remains closed.
