1 Hospitalized, Treated For Burns From House Fire In Watchung

The fire took about 6 hours for volunteer firefighters from Somerset and Union counties to extinguish.

WATCHUNG, NJ — One person was hospitalized following a fire at a Watchung home on Tuesday.

At around 2 p.m., Watchung Fire Department was called to the area of Edgemont Road for a smoke condition.

Watchung Police reported a fully involved single-family residential structure, said Watchung Fire Chief Albert DeSandolo II.

Crews from Watchung, North Plainfield, Berkley Heights, Warren, Martinsville, Scotch Plains, Westfield, as well as other Union County departments and Somerset County departments worked to extinguish the fire until about 8:30 p.m. as well as dealing with low-pressure water issues, said DeSandolo II.

The Somerset County Prosecutor's Office along with Watchung Police and Watchung Fire Prevention Bureau conducted the investigation and ruled the fire was not suspicious.

One patient was taken to the hospital and treated for burns and exposure to smoke.

"There were initial reports of an explosion, but it does not appear to actually be the case. The cause of fire is still under investigation," said Watchung Police Captain Sherif Zaiton.
