RARITAN, NJ — Raritan Police Officers and a Good Samaritan stopped a suicidal woman from jumping off a bridge into the Raritan River on Sunday, authorities said.

At around 2:45 p.m. a 38-year-old woman was standing on the bridge rails of the Nevius Street Pedestrian Bridge threatening to commit suicide by jumping into the Raritan River, Raritan Police Sgt. Everett Holt said.

Two Raritan Police Officers distracted the woman by talking with her for about 10 minutes while a third officer came from the other side of the bridge, Holt said.

While distracted two of the officers and a citizen were able wrestle the woman off the bridge rails, Holt said.

The woman was later transported to a local hospital for evaluation.
