Mrs. Kent, the former Carol Peterson, has lived in West Caldwell her entire life. She is a graduate of Centenary College in Hackettstown and the Newark School for Fine and Industrial Art. Carol worked as a commercial artist, leaving her profession in 1977 when their son was born. Today, Matthew is a freelance writer and photojournalist for magazines and online newspapers.

After her son was on his own, Carol began a career as a volunteer. Her first work was volunteering to teach an elderly man how to read. She did this once a week until he sadly passed away. Continuing on with her volunteer work, she joined Smull Treasures, a consignment shop that was originally located on Smull Avenue. After the shop closed, she was instrumental in introducing the successor shop to the Rotary Club of the Caldwells in the late 1990s. She remains to this day a volunteer at Willing Hearts.
