Officer Leads Caldwell Police in DWI Arrests

Caldwell Police Officer William Roberts receives 2011 Law Enforcement Distinguished Service Award from M.A.D.D. Plus, other CPD news.

Caldwell Police Officer William Roberts was honored for the second year in a row for his efforts in arresting impaired drivers in the borough.

The New Jersey Chapter of M.A.D.D. (Mother's Against Drunk Driving) presented Roberts with a 2011 Law Enforcement Distinguished Service Award at an awards ceremony held at Middlesex County College. 

Roberts had a total of nine DWI arrests in 2011, according to Caldwell Police Chief James Bongiorno.

Last year, Roberts received a Top Gun Award in addition to the Distinguished Service Award.

  • of West Essex recently held a Touch-a-Truck event in the Caldwell synagogue's parking lot. Proceeds from the fundraiser—which allowed children to climb aboard and inspect police, fire and emergency vehicles—were donated to local public safety organizations. Bongiorno thanked Agudath Israel at a recent borough council meeting for making a donation to the Caldwell Police Department. The funds will be used for much needed tools and equipment, the chief said. Sgt. Michael Pellegrino and Det. Brad Palatucci participated in the Touch-a-Truck event.
  • Bongiorno reported at the June 19 council meeting on the recent program which was held in late May/early June. The chief said a total of 125 summonses were issued during the two-week period. He said 20 were for seat belt violations, 5 were fugitive/warrant arrests, 5 suspended licenses, 2 DWIs and 2 drug-related. Bongiorno said the number of seat belt summonses issued each year is trending downward. "Numbers each year get less and less which is encouraging," he said.
  • Sgt. Fred Arnold, one of the department's officers, returned to to participate in the recent moving up ceremony.
