Schools Closed Early In The Caldwells Friday Due To Weather
The NWS forecast from Essex County Airport in Caldwell calls for freezing rain and ice at the end of the day. School schedules have changed
THE CALDWELLS, NJ — Schools in North Caldwell, Caldwell, and West Caldwell all announced an early dismissal Friday due to a forecast for freezing rain. To see any updates Friday, click the school websites:
The Caldwells and the rest of Essex County are under a winter weather advisory from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. Friday, with a prediction from the National Weather Service of "several hours of freezing rain, sleet, and snow" Thursday into Friday.
"Mixed precipitation expected," said the most recent advisory. "Total snow accumulations
of up to one inch and ice accumulations of up to two tenths of an inch ... Plan on slippery road conditions. The hazardous conditions could impact the Friday morning commute."

What's more, in a county that suffered fatalities from flooding last September, three quarters to one inch of rain were forecast for Thursday overnight, about half of what was initially predicted for Tropical Depression Ida.

The forecast says:
Thursday Night: Rain. Temperature rising to around 46 by 3 a.m. Calm wind becoming southwest 5 to 9 mph in the evening. Chance of precipitation is 100 percent. New precipitation amounts between three quarters and one inch possible.
Friday: Rain or freezing rain before 3 p.m., then freezing rain and sleet. Temperature falling to around 29 by 5 p.m. Wind chill values between 20 and 30. North wind around 9 mph. Chance of precipitation is 100 percent. New ice accumulation of less than a 0.1 of an inch possible. Little or no sleet accumulation expected.
