Fire Breaks Out in Third Floor Bedroom

Building located across the street from Caldwell Fire Department.

A fire broke out in an apartment located across the street from the  Saturday night, according to Chief Gary Garamella.

Garamella said a passerby reported seeing flames coming from the rear of the building at 27 Roseland Ave. at approximately 6:30 p.m.

Chief Garamella said no one was home at the time. He said the fire took about 30 to 45 minutes to get under control. The section of Roseland Avenue near Westville Avenue was closed to traffic until the scene was cleared at 9 p.m.

The fire was contained to the rear bedroom on the third floor by a back window, the chief said. Most of the damage was to the outside of the house, he said.

The apartment is currently uninhabitable and electricity to the building has been turned off. The first level of the building is rented by , a dog bakery.

“I don’t think that the building will have to stay closed, but at this point there’s no electric,” Garamella said.

The chief said the fire remains under investigation, but the cause is believed to be accidental. “There’s no reason to suspect anything,” he said.

The responded to the scene and the Essex Fells Fire Dept. was on standby.
