NORTH CALDWELL, NJ — The North Caldwell school board plans to host a public vote in September about bonding to pay to expand school buildings. Last week, they found out that they are eligible for state aid, another step in moving forward with the plans.

Dr. Linda Freda and Board President Mindy Opper said in a letter to parents last week that "State approval of financial aid allows the district to turn preliminary cost estimates into a firmer figure and determine tax impact."

This will give the board more information so that voters understand the costs of the expansion plan.

The board will discuss the figures at its meeting this Tuesday.

School officials held three meetings last year to discuss plans with the public, saying they're educating 710 students in buildings meant for 585.

They intend to hold the vote, or referendum, on Sept. 26.

Here is the letter:

Dear Parents,

After thorough review and careful planning, our district received confirmation of state aid eligibility that lets us move forward with a bond referendum on Sept. 26, 2023.

State approval of financial aid allows the district to turn preliminary cost estimates into a firmer figure and determine tax impact. Our financial advisors are working through those calculations, and we will be prepared to share those figures with the community at the Board of Education meeting at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, May 16.

With that in mind, we invite parents and community members to attend that meeting either in person or virtually. Meetings are held in the Grandview School Cafeteria (35 Hamilton Drive East) and accessible virtually using this Zoom link.

Visit our website ncboe.org/referendum for details on the proposed projects, voting and frequently asked questions. We will continue to share information on this site about events and other opportunities to learn more and ask questions as we move closer to the bond referendum.

Thank you for your interest in our district. We hope to see you at the upcoming meeting!

Sincerely,

Linda Freda, Ed.D

Superintendent

Mindy Opper
