West Essex Middle School Students Create Race Cars

Science teachers Mrs. Lauren Sommers, Mrs. Shannon Corcoran and Mrs. Stacy Gadek asked their eighth grade science students to create and design their own race cars to be propelled by wind energy. Once the students designed their cars in groups, they used a box fan to race them on the floor in the classroom to see how far and how fast they would go. Students had to consider both internal and external forces to create the most effective and efficient car that would attract buyers, according to the teachers. (Students were not permitted to use other forms of acceleration including batteries or remote control.) Eighth graders were graded individually on the projects. The best cars from each class raced against each other for fun.
