Chatham Open Space Tree Planting -- Saturday, May 4th, 9am-1pm
Residents of Chatham are warmly encouraged to join the Chatham Township Open Space Committee and Chatham Boy Scout Troop 8 in the reforestation of 1.25 acres of barren soil within the Township's "Averett Property." Volunteers are needed to plant 50 trees to beautify the parcel, stabilize the soil, reduce the impact of invasive plants, and provide native wildlife habitat.

Trees have been provided by Chatham Township via the recent Sapling Sale, and through private donations.
Volunteers will meet in the driveways along Hillside Avenue, across the street from "The Christmas Tree Farm," just up the hill from River Road. Antiquated housing units were removed last year from the 1.25 acre portion of the 17-acre property, which the Township purchased in 2011 with the help of Morris County Open Space funds and a "bargain sale" from the late Mr. and Mrs. Samuel Averett. The tree planting effort will restore natural tree cover where there is currently none.

Chatham Boy Scout Vincent Maddi, of Troop 8, is co-leading the project with the Open Space Committee. Water will be provided and pizza will be served at lunch time. Bring your shovel, work gloves and appropriate footwear. As a Thank You, volunteers are welcome to share in taking home the 20 extra sweet birch trees (black birch / cherry birch) that have been privately donated. Please call or email Joe Basralian with any questions: (917) 596-7807 / jbbasralian@gmail.com or to let us know you plan to help!
