Mulcahy and Penn Medal at District 10 Wrestling Tournament

Pair advances to Region 3 tournament.

Chatham High School Wrestling had two of its wrestlers advance through the District 10 wrestling tournament which took place over the weekend at Millburn High School. Both wrestlers will advance to the Region 3 tournament which begins this Wednesday at Union High School.

Getting through the districts is a tremendous achievement given the quality of the local competition. Both wrestlers will face an even bigger challenge as they wrestle in Region 3 for a chance to make the State Tournament. Region 3 will have the top three medalists in each weight class from four districts, representing close to 40 different local high schools.

Mulchahy, the three seed, took second place in his 132-pound weight class. His first match resulted in a Technical Fall (win by 15 points) over Union's Chris Dorvius. His second match was against the two seed from Roselle Park, Brendan Leary. This was a closely contested match, and Dylan was able to hold on for a 2-1 victory. In the finals matchup, Mulcahy was pitted against the two-time district champ, Eamonn Gaffney from Seton Hall Prep. Mulcahy lost this match 6-1, which gave him the second-place finish and a chance to compete in the Region 3 tournament.

Penn, also the three seed in the heavyweight class, won his first match 6-3 against the six seed from Irvington, Marc Exantus. Tom then lost his second match against the two seed from Roselle Park, Rodney Cenat. Cenat would go on to take first place. From there, Penn had to win his next match to qualify for third place. He did just that, by beating the five seed from Roselle Park, Avasar Patel, in a 4-1 victory.

Both Mulcahy and Penn will have their work cut out for them in a very tough Region 3 tournament. Coach Cassera will certainly have them prepared, and many wrestling fans from Chatham will be there to cheer them on. Congrats, gents!
